New A Life, Still Submission!
Sean BlackThe Present University of Miami, Miami, Florida Carbon Pigment Print 5” x 5” print over matted in a 10” x 11” frame finished dimension
Bio and Artist Statement In 2007, Sean Black began traditional printing in a darkroom in Florida with his father, a veteran press photographer for the U.S. Army’s Stars and Stripes newspaper. Resurrecting images from his father’s archive of negatives shot during Europe’s post WWII revitalization, a father-and-son project was born.  Compelling him to return to school and create his own work Sean began producing images documenting the time spent with his aging father.  He is currently pursuing his MFA degree at the University of Miami.
His first body of work simply titled “Dad” synthesizes an intimate series of portraits of his father with daily routine, nostalgic reflection and personal interest.  It was an ongoing project focused on re-awakening significant life experiences as well as illuminating and exploring present day wonderments. Protectively subtle in approach, the project was about spending time with his father, maximizing his personal well-being, and coming to terms with changing familial roles.  It was about the preservation of his father’s fading memories, the legitimacy of his existence, and the emotional impact the journey took as his mental, emotional, and physical states progressively declined.  The series of images are a visual memento of their time together as both struggled to face the full circle of life and cement their impervious bonds as both artists and as father and son.  Ultimately, the project was about slowly gaining the strength to say good bye.
